Laura Thuirer

Laura Thuirer (Alabama) graduated from Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education (voice major). While at FSC, she became a member of Alpha Phi chapter, serving as director of publicity and historian for the chapter. Upon graduating, she became a member of Zeta Tau Alumnae chapter in St. Petersburg, serving as President, First Vice President, Director of Publicity, and Scholarship Chairman until she moved to Alabama in 1998. She served as a Province President from 1986 - 2009, guiding chapters in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.

After becoming certified to teach mathematics in grades 6-12, Laura taught 8th grade math at a middle school in St. Petersburg, FL for 16 years before moving to Alabama. While in Florida she served three different area churches as part-time director of music and went back to school to earn her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction (mathematics education) from the University of South Florida.

Laura presently teaches mathematics in Alabama at Homewood Middle School and also coaches the 8th grade Algebra math team.  In 2007, Laura became a National Board Certified Teacher of Adolescence Mathematics and recently renewed that certification.

She is very active in her church, singing in the choir, ringing in a handbell choir, singing solos, and playing violin in the orchestra.  Occasionally, she is asked to direct those ensembles as well. She is also a charter member of “Embellishments”, an advanced, civic handbell choir, whose ringers are auditioned each year.

In 2009, she resigned her position of Iota Province President to become the National Treasurer for Delta Omicron, the position she currently holds.
